Browser reading guide
Browser reading views turn an article page into a simpler layout with adjustable text. They can reduce distractions around material the browser already received, which often helps with long stories, small type or crowded layouts. They are also useful when the article is freely available and you simply want a more comfortable page.
A reader button is not evidence that subscriber-only text is available. It may display a complete story, an introduction or nothing at all. Open the publisher's article first, then use your browser's reading controls. This guide supplies instructions rather than an article copy, and it does not automatically open another site or change your settings.
Chrome on a computer
Right-click a text article and choose Open in reading mode. Chrome may show a full reading view or a side panel, depending on your version and preferences. You can also look under More → More tools → Reading mode. Adjust text size, spacing and colors to suit your reading. Safari on Mac
Open the article, click the Page menu in the Smart Search field, then choose Show Reader. Safari offers the control when it recognizes an article it can display. While reading, use the Reader controls to change the font, size and background. Choose Hide Reader, or press Escape, to return to the original page. Apple's Safari Reader guide.
Firefox Reader View
Look for the Reader View icon in the address bar. If it appears, click it to simplify the page. Use the reading controls to adjust typography and theme. To leave, click the Reader View icon again, use its exit control, or go back in the browser. The missing icon usually means Firefox has not identified a suitable article; it is not a reason to install an unknown extension. Mozilla's Reader View instructions.
Microsoft Edge
On a supported page, use Reading mode in the address bar or press F9. Some versions call this Immersive Reader. If the control is hidden, look under Settings → Appearance → Toolbar to enable Reading mode. Edge also supports selecting text, right-clicking and opening the selection in Reading mode. Check what you are reading
Compare the first and last paragraphs with the original page. Check whether important captions, tables or linked continuations are missing. Reading views can omit interactive elements even when the underlying article is public. If only a subscription message or preview appears, try an existing archive or a publisher-provided access option. Keep using the original page when the simplified version removes context you need.
